Tell Your Company’s Story

Well, first and foremost, does your company have a story?

Are you simply running a shoe store and working to make it all profitable so you can feed your family, send your kids off to a decent college and have a sufficient retirement? All of which are important considerations as a business owner.

Or are you running a shoe store with all of the above in mind AND you have the purpose of providing top notch shoes to your local area. And, as the shoe store owner, you also consider it an important part of your operation to help out your local school, the church or maybe even the Little League team.

Most business owners do have a story. Often this story simply evolves over time. It wouldn’t hurt to sit down and put this all in writing. What do you accomplish on a day-to-day basis? What longer term goals does the company have? How have you helped your community? Do you have a grand plan for the company that involves more than just its profitability?

When you’re interviewing job applicants, take a few minutes and tell them your story. You could just simply tell them what it is, or you could infuse the telling with the passion you have for this.

Either way, once your applicant has heard the company story, let’s find out what he thinks about this.

The first question would be a simple:

“Frank, what do you think of our company story?

You could then move on to:

“Frank, how do you see yourself connecting with that story?”

And then:

“Do you think there are any missing components to that story, Frank? If so, what would that be?”
