That’s an interesting question.
Some of us have very well developed goals. We know where we want to be in one year, five years, even further down the line.
Some of us are just moving along from day-to-day.
If your candidate is very goal-oriented, it would be helpful to know how this particular job fits in with his goals.
You could start things off in this way:
“Frank, tell me about your personal goals. Do you have an idea of where you’d like to be in a year? In five years?”
Frank may ask for some clarification on this and you could ask:
“Have you set any financial goals for yourself? Is there an income level you’d like to achieve in the next year?
“Do you have a particular position in the business world you’d like to hold?
“Are you looking to increase your education in the next year or so?”
Frank should be able to answer these questions and then you simply ask:
“How would this job you are applying for align with these goals?”
Frank will answer this to the best of his ability and you’ll have learned something potentially very valuable about him.
